5 Common Causes Of Dry Eye

Dry Eye

At Lamorinda Optometry in Lafayette, CA, we provide treatment for a number of eye conditions. One of these, dry eye syndrome, can make daily life quite difficult. Luckily, there are effective treatments available from an optometrist on our optometry team to give you relief.

What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?

This is a condition that happens when there aren't enough tears or the right quality of tears to lubricate your eyes. This causes discomfort and pain and can make wearing contact lenses very difficult. It can also lead to more serious issues such as ulcers in the cornea if not treated by an optometrist, such as one on our optometry team.

Symptoms Of Dry Eye

Below are some of the common symptoms you'll have with dry eyes:

  • Increased light sensitivity
  • Blurry vision
  • Mucus in or around the eyes
  • Itching or burning feeling in the eyes
  • Red and/or swollen eyes
  • A sensation of something foreign in the eye
  • Excessive tearing (this is a reflex action to try and lubricate the eye)

Causes Of Dry Eye

Several factors can be a reason why you have dry eye syndrome. A primary reason is your age. Once we get older, it's common for tear production to slow. These are what produce the watery component of tears.

Also, there are medications. These can all cause dry eye syndrome as a side effect.

Another is computer usage. When you have a job that requires you to spend hours in front of a computer, it can lead to dry eye. This is because you blink less often when working on a computer, which leads to fewer tears being produced.

You can have dry eyes from a LASIK procedure. This is because the cut made in the cornea during LASIK can damage the nerves that help stimulate tear production.

Environmental factors like wind, smoke, and dry air can also lead to dry eyes.
