At Lamorinda Optometry, we offer an advanced corneal reshaping technique known as orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K. Corneal reshaping is effective for correcting one's vision as well as slowing the progression of nearsightedness in children.
What is Ortho-K?
Ortho-K are specialty rigid and gas permeable contact lenses designed for reshaping the cornea overnight to correct one's refractive error. The lenses are removed in the morning to help a person enjoy clear vision during the day without wearing contact lenses or eyeglasses.
Who Can Benefit from Ortho-K?
Ortho-K lenses can be used to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. People who don’t qualify for LASIK refractive surgery or are sensitive to soft contact lenses can also benefit greatly from Ortho-K. In addition, Ortho-K has shown to be effective in slowing down progression of nearsightedness in children.
How Ortho-K Works
Ortho-K lenses apply gentle pressure on the epithelium, which is the front layer of the cornea. This pressure makes the epithelium cells move to the periphery of the cornea, allowing for temporary corneal reshaping. This vision correction method has been FDA-approved and proven effective for correcting vision while sleeping so that one can see during the day without glasses or contact lenses.
How Long Does It Take to See Results?
Individual results vary depending on the level of refractive error a patient has. Some patients will see results in as little as one to two days, while others will take a few weeks. Regardless, we want to ensure that you are fitted with the proper lenses for the best results.
